In this post, I’d love to share a session at Derwent Water, in the Lake District from start to finish, so you can see exactly how it feels and unfolds. Golden Hour photography in the lake district
There are some evenings that stay with you long after they’ve passed. Not because anything extraordinary happened on the surface — but because everything felt quietly, perfectly right. This was one of those evenings.
A golden hour session by the lake. Soft light. Still water. And two people completely at ease with each other.
What Is Golden Hour? And Why It Matters?
Golden hour is that short window of time just before sunset, when the light becomes softer, warmer, and more forgiving. The sun sits lower in the sky. Shadows stretch gently, the colours deepen and everything feels calmer. For photography, it’s one of the most beautiful times of day. But beyond that, it creates an atmosphere that’s hard to describe until you experience it. There’s less rush, less noise. People slow down without even realising it and that’s exactly why I always suggest it for sessions like this. Not just for how it looks — but for how it feels.
How I Met Ben and Magali? Golden Hour photography in the lake district
Ben and Magali were visiting the Lake District from Marseille, in the south of France.
They reached out before their trip and we organised everything, we booked the date and place, we discussed the outfits they are going to wear, what sort of feel are they looking for. This wasn’t their first visit to the Lakes. They had already fallen in love with this place — the openness, the calm, the way nature feels so present here. And this time, they wanted to take a small part of it home with them. Not as a souvenir, but as something more lasting. A way to remember how it feels to be here, together.
Why They Chose a Golden Hour Session
When we spoke about their session, golden hour felt like a natural choice. They weren’t looking for something posed or structured. They wanted something quiet. Something real. An experience that felt like an extension of their holiday, not an interruption to it.
Golden hour gives you that space. It invites you to slow down, to walk, to pause, to notice.
And for a couple like Ben and Magali — whose connection is gentle, effortless, and deeply rooted, it was the perfect setting.Golden Hour photography in the lake district
An Evening That Unfolded Naturally
We met by the edge of the lake as the day began to soften. There was no rush to begin.
Just a simple start — a walk along the shoreline, a few quiet words, the kind of conversation that comes easily when people are comfortable.
That’s always where it begins for me. Not with the camera, but with connection.
As we moved along the water’s edge, the session unfolded in its own time.
They walked hand in hand. Paused to take in the view.
Laughed quietly at something only they understood. At one point, they sat together watching the light shift across the lake, completely absorbed in the moment — and those are the moments I look for.
The kind of connection you wait for to happen naturally.
The Light, The Place, The Feeling
As the sun dipped lower, the light wrapped around them in the softest way.
The surface of Derwent Water reflected the sky, the hills glowed gently, and everything felt still. It’s hard to separate the place from the people in moments like this.
Because the Lake District isn’t just a backdrop. It becomes part of the story. Part of the feeling. And for Ben and Magali, this place holds meaning.
You could sense it in the way they moved through it.
More Than a Photoshoot
What I loved most about this session is that it never felt like a photoshoot.
It felt like an evening with friends. A shared experience. A quiet celebration of their relationship. And that’s what these sessions are about for me.
Not perfect posing. Not creating something artificial.
But giving people space to be themselves, somewhere beautiful, and allowing those moments to unfold naturally.
Because that’s where the photographs come from.
Why Moments Like This Matter
When the session came to an end, there was no clear “finish.” Just the light fading, the air cooling slightly, and that sense of calm that comes at the end of a good evening.
Moments like this pass quickly. That’s the truth of them. But photographs give them a way to stay. Not just as images, but as something you can return to. Something you can feel again.
For Ben and Magali, this was a way to hold onto a small part of their time here.
A reminder of this place, this evening, this season of their lives together.
Thinking About Your Own Golden Hour Session?
If you’re visiting the Lake District and feel drawn to the idea of documenting your time here in a natural, meaningful way, a golden hour session is one of the most beautiful ways to do it.
It’s not about creating perfect images. It’s about creating space for moments that feel real.
Sometimes all it takes is a quiet evening, a place you love, and the person you share it with.
And the rest unfolds naturally.
