What Is Destination Photography?
People sometimes ask what makes destination photography different from a regular photo session. For me, it’s when the place itself becomes part of the story.
You’re not just choosing a location because it looks beautiful — you’re creating photographs in a landscape that holds meaning for you. Maybe it’s where your family returns year after year. Maybe it’s where you’re celebrating a milestone.
Maybe it’s simply somewhere you’ve fallen in love with. The Lake District has a way of becoming that kind of place for people.
And that’s where destination photography feels so special. It isn’t about arriving somewhere scenic and standing in front of a camera.
It feels much more like an experience.
A golden hour walk on the fells. Throwing pebbles into the lake. Wandering along a quiet shoreline. Watching children explore. Sharing stories as the light changes. The photographs grow out of that Naturally. And that, to me, is where the magic lives.
My Experience With Destination Sessions
One of the things I love most about this work is seeing the many reasons people choose to make photography part of their time here.
Over the years, I’ve photographed people visiting the Lake District for all kinds of deeply personal reasons. Big milestone birthdays, 50th wedding anniversaries, Family reunions where relatives have travelled from different corners of the world to gather in one place.
Family holidays with several generations together — something that doesn’t happen nearly often enough.
And families who simply wanted this chapter of life documented before it changed.
I’ve also photographed couples who wanted to celebrate their connection in a place they love. Sometimes it’s a family story. Sometimes it’s a love story. Sometimes it’s simply a quiet decision to honour this moment while it’s here.
And each time, I’m reminded that people aren’t only investing in photographs.
They’re investing in memories.
Why People Choose It
I think what draws people to destination photography is that it offers something beyond images. It gives shape to a moment that might otherwise pass too quickly. It allows you to be present in the memory, not just documenting it from the edges.
And it creates photographs where everyone exists together. Especially in a world where so much of family life lives on phones, often incomplete. One person missing. A rushed snapshot. Moments scattered and forgotten.
Intentional photographs are different. They hold more. They become part of the story families keep.
Why It Matters
I believe the photographs we make intentionally — with thought, care and presence — often become the ones we treasure most. Not because they are perfect. But because they are full of life. Because they hold real connection. Because they capture something that cannot be recreated later.
And years from now, they still make you feel something. That is what I believe photography can do. And why I love offering destination sessions here in the Lake District.
Because whether you come for a family reunion, a milestone celebration, an anniversary, or simply because you’ve fallen in love with this place…
Your story matters.
And it deserves to be remembered beautifully.
Thinking About a Destination Photo Session in the Lake District?
If you’re visiting the Lakes and would love to turn part of your holiday into something meaningful and lasting, I’d love to help you create an experience that feels relaxed, natural and true to you.
My sessions are gentle and unhurried. We walk, we explore, we let things unfold. And in the process, we create photographs full of warmth, movement and connection — images that hold a moment in time and keep telling its story for years to come.
Sometimes all it takes is a beautiful place, the people you love, and an evening of golden light.
And the rest unfolds naturally.
