A Parents Guide: How to prepare your Kids and Toddlers for a stress free Family Photoshoot in the Lake District

Let's be honest, planning a family photoshoot can feel exciting… and sometimes also a little nerve-wracking, especially when young children are involved. One of the most common worries parents share with me is:

"What if my children don’t behave during the photoshoot?"

If you’re feeling that way, please know you are absolutely not alone. As a family photographer in the Lake District — and as a parent of two boys myself — I completely understand how unpredictable children can be. The beautiful truth is that children do not need to behave perfectly to create beautiful photographs. In fact, some of the most meaningful images come from genuine, playful, real-life moments.

My approach to family photography is relaxed, child-led, and focused on connection rather than posing. Children naturally light me up, and I truly love working with them. I believe family photography should feel like a joyful experience, not something children feel pressured to endure.

Here are some gentle and practical tips to help prepare your kids for a relaxed and enjoyable family photoshoot.

Talk Positively About the Photoshoot

Children respond strongly to how we talk about new experiences. When preparing kids for a family photoshoot, it really helps to present it as something fun and exciting rather than something they have to "perform" in.

You might describe the session as:

  • A fun family day

  • An outdoor family adventure

  • Time to cuddle, play and explore together

There is absolutely no need to tell children they must sit still or smile for the camera. The more relaxed and positive the atmosphere feels, the more natural and happy your photographs will be.

Let Children Be Themselves

One of the biggest myths about family photography is that children need to sit nicely and pose. Natural, relaxed family photography is actually about movement, interaction, and real connection.

Some children are energetic and love to run and explore. Others are shy and prefer staying close to their parents. Both personalities create beautiful and meaningful images.

If your child doesn’t want to do something during the session, that is completely fine. We simply move Playfully into something else. My sessions always follow the flow of your family rather than forcing children into uncomfortable situations.

Make Sure Kids Are Well Rested and Well Fed

This is one of the most important tips for a stress-free family photoshoot with toddlers and young children.

Preparing toddlers and kids for outdoor family session is essential, so please try to ensure your children:

  • Have had a proper nap or rest

  • Have eaten a good meal

  • Are feeling comfortable and energised

Tired or hungry children can understandably struggle with patience, especially outdoors. A well-rested and well-fed child is much more likely to enjoy the experience and feel relaxed during the session.

It's okay to bring a few simple, non-messy snacks, and it can also be incredibly helpful if little energy boosts are needed during the shoot.

Choosing Comfortable Outfits for Outdoor Family Photos in the Lake District

Outfits play a big role in helping children feel confident and free to move during your family photoshoot. Colour coordinated outfits look beautiful in photos, but comfort is just as important. So when choosing your outfits keep this in mind.

When choosing clothing, I recommend:

  • Soft, breathable fabrics

  • Clothes children can run, jump, and play in

  • Layers suitable for Lake District weather

  • Avoiding scratchy or restrictive clothing

  • No harsh colours, or prints, because it can look distracting in photos, the less pattern the better to keep focus on their lovely faces

Children naturally want to explore, climb, spin, and cuddle. Comfortable outfits allow them to move freely and behave naturally, which creates far more authentic and joyful photographs.

Choose Practical Outdoor Footwear

Since many Lake District family photoshoots take place outdoors in beautiful natural locations, footwear is just as important as clothing.

I always encourage families to choose shoes that allow children to feel safe and confident moving around. Proper outdoor footwear allows kids to:

  • Run freely

  • Jump safely

  • Explore naturally

  • Feel comfortable on uneven ground

When they feel physically comfortable and secure, it's ultimately helping children feel relaxed during photoshoot

Expect Play, Not Posing

My photography sessions are designed to feel more like family time than a formal photoshoot. I gently guide families with playful prompts, movement, and interaction rather than strict posing.

During your session, you can expect:

  • Walking together

  • Playing games

  • Lots of cuddles and laughter

  • Exploring beautiful Lake District scenery

  • Natural moments unfolding organically

Some of the most magical photographs happen in between moments — when children are giggling, running back to their parents, or simply being themselves.

Stay Flexible and Go With the Flow

Working with children always involves a little unpredictability — and that is absolutely okay. Flexibility is key to creating a relaxed family photography experience.

If your child feels shy, energetic, or simply not interested in a particular idea, we adapt and move on. There is never any pressure for children to perform or behave a certain way.

The goal is always to create an enjoyable experience for your whole family, where genuine connection and emotion naturally unfold.

Focus on Connection, Not Behaviour

Years from now, your children won’t remember whether they stood still or smiled perfectly during a photoshoot. What they will remember is how they felt being together as a family on that day, the memories they created on the day .

Family photography is about capturing:

  • The way your child reaches for your hand

  • The laughter between siblings

  • The comfort of being held by parents

  • The joy of simply being together

Those are the moments that truly matter and my goal is to capture these small glimmers for you.

A Relaxed Family Photoshoot in the Lake District

The Lake District offers such a beautiful natural setting for family photography. Open landscapes, lakeside walks, and peaceful nature help children relax and explore naturally, which makes sessions feel calm and enjoyable for everyone involved.

My role during your session is to gently guide, observe, and capture your family’s real connection while allowing children to simply be themselves.

Final Thoughts

Preparing your kids for a family photoshoot doesn’t need to be stressful. With a relaxed mindset, comfortable clothing, and a focus on fun and connection, your session can become a wonderful family memory in itself.

Every child is unique, and I always work patiently and playfully with each family’s natural rhythm. Children bring so much joy, energy, and authenticity into sessions, and it is truly one of my favourite parts of my work. I will guide you through it every step of the way. From the moment you booked your session I will help you plan, I am always happy to answer any questions you might have, and on the day I will guide you through the experience to make it enjoyable for everyone.

If you are planning a Lake District family photoshoot and would love a relaxed, child-led experience, I would be delighted to capture your family story.
