Top 5 Scenic Spots for Family Photo Sessions in Keswick, Lake District

Hi! I'm Renata — a lifestyle photographer based in the heart of the beautiful Lake District, and if there's one question I get asked all the time, it's this: “Where’s the best place in Keswick for a family photo shoot?” Honestly, we're spoiled for choice. From misty lakes and rolling hills to flower-filled gardens and charming streets, Keswick offers the perfect backdrop for every kind of session — whether it's a relaxed family shoot, a maternity moment, or something just for you.

So, if you’re thinking about booking a session and want a location that feels both natural and meaningful, here are my top five favourites — tried and tested!

1. Friars Crag

Just a short walk from the lakeside, Friars Crag offers one of the most stunning views in the whole Lake District — a peaceful spot that feels almost magical.

It’s great for couples, maternity shoots, or quieter family portraits. The light filtering through the trees can be beautiful here, and the path is easy enough for little ones to manage too.

💡 Best times: Weekday mornings or evenings when it’s quiet and calm.

2. Derwentwater Lakeside

One of Keswick’s crown jewels, Derwentwater is ideal for relaxed, nature-filled sessions.

You’ve got a gorgeous mix of lakeshore paths, little jetties, mountain views, and peaceful woodland nearby — perfect for candid shots of kids exploring or cozy family moments. I especially love shooting here during the golden hour (an hour before sunset) when the light is soft and dreamy.

📸 Top tip: Pack wellies or comfy boots — we might get a bit muddy, but it’s always worth it!

3. Hope Park

If you love flowers, footpaths, and a bit more structure in your setting, Hope Park is a hidden gem right near the town centre.

In spring and summer, the gardens come alive with colour, making it ideal for young families or anyone who wants a classic, cheerful look. There are benches, bridges that add a playful feel to your photos.

🌸 Bonus: It’s super accessible and close to cafés for a post-session treat!

4. Latrigg Viewpoint

For the more adventurous, Latrigg offers breathtaking views over Keswick and Derwentwater — and it's just a short hike (or a drive to the upper car park and a gentle walk).

It’s perfect for families who love the outdoors, couples looking for an epic backdrop, or anyone wanting those sweeping, elevated Lake District shots.

🧺 Photo idea: You could even bring a picnic blanket for a relaxed, cozy vibe with the hills behind you.

5. Keswick Town & Market Square

Sometimes, you don’t need to venture far — Keswick itself is full of charm! The cobbled streets, old stone buildings, market stalls, and shopfronts create a warm, welcoming setting for lifestyle portraits.

This location works beautifully for branding sessions, solo portraits, or relaxed couple/family shoots with more of an editorial, everyday feel.

Insider tip: Early mornings are best — fewer people, softer light, and maybe a cheeky coffee after we wrap up!
